Collecting Payment for your Home Business
If you own a home business one of your most important tasks is collecting payment. After all, if you do not get paid, what is the point in running a business? When you work for a company, this is something that you never have to worry about. Instead, you simply do your job and let the accounting department take care of accounts receivable. Unfortunately, most home businesses do not have this luxury. You will need to become skilled at collecting payment from the first day that you do business.
In most cases, you will not run into clients that are trying to scam you. Generally speaking, the majority of your clients will want to do business with you again so they will respect your payment wishes as far as time is concerned. But with that being said, not all clients will fit that mold. In fact, you will probably run into a couple of deadbeats a year. While avoiding clients like this is essential, even the best of the best get duped from time to time.
If a client is refusing to pay, make sure that you stay on top of them. You can start by sending email reminders, and then move onto telephone calls if that does not work for you. Remember, you always want to be courteous with clients even if they are not paying you. If you are rude and aggressive, this is more the reason for them to hide. Of course, if being nice is getting you nowhere, being a bit forceful could be the solution.
Overall, as a home business owner you need to learn how to collect payment from clients. You will find that this is one of the most difficult parts of your job. But once you get used to it, you will be comfortable asking for payment when it is due.
