New Business Introduces Pepperoni Rolls
Summerville, SC (PRWEB) April 24, 2006 -- When you think of West Virginia, you automatically think of coal mines or perhaps the recent coal mining tragedies. What most people don’t know about West Virginia is that they are known for something called a pepperoni roll. You can’t find pepperoni rolls outside of West Virginia . If you ask someone if they’ve ever heard of these tasty rolls most people will look at you with a look of confusion and often ask What’s a pepperoni roll?
Pepperoni rolls were born in the 1940’s. They were invented by an Italian baker who one day noticed coal miners eating pepperoni wrapped in bread for lunch. They ate pepperoni sandwiches because they were affordable and kept well without refrigeration. He then thought of the idea to take the pepperoni and bake it in an Italian roll. The rest is history. Over the years pepperoni rolls have remained a West Virginia favorite. You can find them in most roadside convenient stores and bakeries, but outside of West Virginia they are virtually non existent.
After moving from West Virgina over fifteen years ago I started working on my own recipe, and through trial and error I finally smiled one day realizing I had found that distinct taste once again. Pepperoni rolls are spicy slices of pepperoni or sticks wrapped in a soft slightly sweet Italian roll. The combination of the sweet roll and the spicy filling is very satisfying and quite addictive. They can be eaten cold or warmed in the microwave which causes the delicious oils from the pepperoni to seep into the bread…there’s nothing like it. The best thing about pepperoni rolls is its longevity. They can sit at room temperature requiring no refrigeration, and be kept for months in the freezer. Since starting my business I have made it my priority to maintain that distinct flavor that has made these tasty rolls West Virginias unofficial state symbol.
